Time to Change Daylight Savings

(First of all, can we appreciate my use of the word 'time' as a pun?)

While a topic like Daylight Savings Time might seem like a minor issue in an election, the benefits of no longer changing time in the Fall will impact every single person in Newfoundland with the positives being multifaceted.

The long and the short of it is the Winters of Newfoundland will be brighter, meaning an increase in quality of life for everyone.  But, the  benefits continue from there. See below if you want to know more!

Health Effects

  • Sleep Disruption: Changing clocks disrupts sleep patterns, leading to sleep deprivation and associated issues such as fatigue and decreased productivity.

  • Increased Heart Attack Risk: Studies show a rise in heart attacks and strokes following the spring clock change due to the sudden loss of sleep.

  • Mental Health Impact: The disruption can exacerbate anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.

Economic Costs

  • Decreased Productivity: The adjustment period leads to decreased workplace efficiency and increased errors.

  • Accidents: The time change correlates with higher rates of workplace and car accidents, costing lives and money.

  • System Updates: Businesses and governments must spend resources on adapting computer systems and schedules for DST.

Energy Savings

  • DST was originally implemented to save energy, but modern studies show the savings are minimal or nonexistent. The widespread use of air conditioning, electronics, and lighting means energy consumption doesn't significantly decrease during DST.
